  6. This interesting reference work contains more than 4,000 listings
  7. of different things to do and places to visit on-line.  Not
  8. restricted to the Internet and USENET itself, Net Guide covers
  9. CompuServe, GEnie, AOL, Delphi, Prodigy, BIX as well as hundreds
  10. of BBSs as well.  It has been called "the TV Guide to Cyberspace"
  11. which pretty well sums up what this book is all about.

  13. The foreword was written by John Perry Barlow, Grateful Dead
  14. lyricist and co-founder of the E.F.F.  There is a basic
  15. introduction to on-line life in question-and-answer format and a
  16. brief explanation of how to use some Internet tools like TELNET,
  17. FTP, e-mail, etc.  However, if you need to learn how to use these
  18. utilities there are more comprehensive tutorials available.

  20. Where the Net Guide shines brightly is in its listings of the
  21. resources of the on-line world which have been divided into
  22. twelve parts for easy categorization.  These are: Arts &
  23. Entertainment, Computers & Software, Telecommunications &
  24. Electronics, Nations, Cultures & Religions, Business & Finances,
  25. Games, Sports & the Outdoors,Mind & Body, Home, Hobbies &
  26. Shopping, Lifestyles, Leisure & Travel, Public Affairs, 
  27. Politics & the Media, Nature, Science & Techology and Schools, 
  28. Reference & Higher Learning.  These 12 parts are further divided
  29. into 152 categories and each of these categories is further broken 
  30. down into countless sub-categories too numerous to mention here.
  31. I noticed that the same entry will appear in more than one category 
  32. when appropriate.  Finally, the Net Guide is well indexed.

  34. The interesting aspect of the Net Guide is that it covers more than
  35. just the Internet.  This includes some of the super BBSs which are
  36. not included in most other guides I've seen.  I do not sunscribe
  37. to any of the commercial online services so consequently I tend
  38. to ignore services I cannot access.  I did find it interesting
  39. to see what else is out there on-line.  There's also a directory
  40. of FIDO BBSs but I found that several of the ones I know of here
  41. in the Boston area are missing.  Also Canadian FIDO BBSs were not
  42. included.

  44. Net Guide is the first of a series of Net books produced by a ten-
  45. member team of Net-savvy reporters at Michael Wolff & Company.
  46. Other current Net Books include Net Games and Net Chat which I
  47. hope to review here in the near future.  Other Net titles, such as
  48. Net Money, Net Trak, Net Sports and Net Tech are still in production
  49. or planning stages.

  51. Whatever your on-line interests may be, you are sure to find it in
  52. the Net Guide and more specialized Net book.
